Stuarts Point was the port for vessels entering the Macleay River from the river's old entrance. This silted over when a new entrance was forged by flood in 1893. Now the riverside hamlet sits by calm waters, which are breeding grounds for fish and crabs. Both novice and die-hard bird watchers are virtually guaranteed of spotting a huge range of bird, from raptors and waterbirds to the feathered natives of the Australian bush. The Bird Hide is an excellent place to spot wetland birds and is located just outside of South West Rocks off Boyters Lane. There is parking, an information hut and bird hide. You can either sit in the bird hide or take the two kilometres of built walkways. The Macleay has a range of migratory bird life, so you are likely to see different birds throughout the year. One of the remarkable points to note about the site where the bird hide is located is that it previously was a rundown dairy farm. The site was rehabilitated by the local council who planted 15,000 native trees and shrubs, protected and improved eight hectares of mangrove and saltmarsh, built the walkway and constructed the bird hide and information hut. The bird hide is open seven days a week and is free to enter. Just make sure to pack your binoculars and bird book!...

Powder Magazine track is an excellent short walk to the historic powder magazines on the headland at Arakoon National Park on the North Coast.  Only one of the constructions still stands, but you can still admire the work of early Australian stone masons and whilst taking in the inspiring views. Detouring from the easy Monument Hill walking track, the track leads through casuarinas, banksias and craggy old bloodwoods. Crossing small brides through moist gullies of tea tree and palms, you’ll catch glimpses of Trial Bay and perhaps a majestic sea-eagle cruising the coast. The medium track meanders through a patch of cool rainforest with large glossy vines before meeting up with the Bridle trail. Unfortunately the scheme failed, however you’ll still be able to see the remains of the breakwater from the guard tower lookout. During World War I the gaol became an internment camp for people of German descent who were feared to be enemy sympathisers. Today, this picturesque historic ruin stands as a testament to those who lived and died here, with a museum and memorial for visitors to get a better idea of life in those days. Feeling energetic?
