Boyne Valley Historical Society

Railway Terrace, Boyne Valley QLD 4680
The Boyne Valley Historical Society Cottage was opened in 1988 and was formed by a group of enthusiastic volunteers with a desire to preserve the vast history of the Boyne Valley, which dates back to the 1870s, when gold and copper mining put the Valley on the map, followed by the settlers who pioneered industries such as cattle grazing, farm produce, dairying and a thriving timber and saw-milling industry, which still exists today. Tourists who want to leave the usual tourist trail and enjoy some genuine country hospitality and historically significant sites should make sure they put the Boyne Valley on their itinerary. With the exception of Many Peaks, the four small towns of the Boyne Valley, Nagoorin, Ubobo, Builyan and Many Peaks, are dotted along the Boyne River. The scenic drive along the newly sealed road from Calliope, or across the Blackman's Gap Road (some dirt) from Miriam Vale, takes less than an hour. The cottage houses a large display of photographs and memorabilia which convey a sense of bygone days. Special theme days allow them to vary the displays and feature items from the collections of long term residents and interested parties.

Ubobo

41355 - Boyne Valley QLD 4680
Located 75 kilometres west of Gladstone is the small rural township of Ubobo, one of four towns which are part of the Boyne Valley - including Nagoorin, Many Peaks and Builyan. Ubobo, the town that fought off Telstra and saved its telephone box. That may not seem a big deal to city slickers, but if you ask any resident - it was worth fighting for. At last check, the box was still there and working. If the phone call is that urgent, there is a shorter route, travelling from Miriam Vale, heading west and onwards to Monto. You may be surprised to learn that Ubobo is more than just a pretty face. There is free and paid camping, hotel and dorm-style accommodation, excellent fishing at Boynedale, general store, post office, church, sporting grounds and great annual family events....
