Minerva Hills National Park

Dendle's Drive, Springsure QLD 4722

A relatively small National Park near Springsure in Central Queensland, Minerva Hills is dominated by Mount Boorambool, rising 600 metres above sea level, and the larger cliff fringed Mount Zamia (560 metres), which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Named after the Minerva Hills Volcanics, these mountains are some of the oldest in a line of volcanoes across the eastern Australian continent - dating back some 20 million years. The rich variety of plants provide habitat for much wildlife. Look for eastern grey kangaroos, wallaroos and several different wallabies throughout the park. Spotlighting at night may reward with a sighting of the elusive sugar-glider or the larger greater-glider. The park is also home to the locally rare fawn-footed melomies and the little known pebble-mound mouse. Fred Gorge picnic area has wood barbecues, toilets, limited drinking water and shelter sheds. Picnic tables are provided at the Springsure and Eclipse lookouts. Camping is not permitted.

Springsure

38624 - Springsure QLD 4722
Situated in a delightful valley with spectacular Mount Zamia and Virgin Rock overlooking the town, Springsure is located 66 kilometres south of Emerald on the Gregory Highway section of the Great Inland Way. If you hadn't already guessed, the town was given its name thanks to the springs located in the creek and gullies at the time of settlement. There are a number of historical sites in this town including the Staircase Range Cutting, built by Chinese immigrants in 1905 to pay tribute to the many early wagon teams that stopped in Springsure overnight on their way from Rockhampton to the Gulf and Barcoo country. Just south of the town you'll find Old Rainworth Fort, built in 1862 as a way of defending settlers against aboriginal attack. To learn more about the history of the town, head to Cairdbeign Homestead and School where relics from the past are on display for visitors. There's also the chance to go fossicking for opalised wood and labradorite in the fields around Springsure....

Minerva Hills National Park

Dendle's Drive, Springsure QLD 4722
Spectacular jagged peaks provide a scenic backdrop to this Central Queensland national park. Formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, Mount Boorambool and cliff-fringed Mount Zamia dominate the landscape today. Visit the iconic Virgin Rock situated on Mount Zamia. Its name is derived from the figure appearing in the town-facing side of the rock that looks like the Virgin Mary cradling the baby Jesus. See if you can spot these figures at night time when Virgin Rock is floodlit for all to see. In the grassy open woodlands mountain coolibahs, silver-leaved ironbarks and gum-topped bloodwoods tower over macrozamias and grasstrees. Dry rainforest featuring figs, stinging trees, pittosporums and vines flourishes in sheltered gorges and at the base of the sheer cliffs. Spinifex grasslands dotted with wattles grow on the mountain summits. The park also supports spotted gum forests and low-lying heath. Stone scatters and rock art are historical evidence of the Kariai people who lived in the surrounding area, which included the site of Springsure, at the time Europeans settled the area. Ka Ka Mundi, Carnarvon National Park

42184 - Springsure QLD 4722
The sandstone cliffs of the Great Dividing Range dominate the clear blue skyline to the south as you drive across the open, undulating country towards Ka Ka Mundi. This remote section of Carnarvon National Park features more than 30km of sandstone escarpments and plateaus. The sandstones of Ka Ka Mundi were laid down in freshwater lakes and streams about 180 million years ago. In more recent geological time, basaltic lava covered the ranges. Erosion over the ages has left only a few basalt outcrops, such as Mount Ka Ka Mundi. Old cattle yards near some of the springs are reminders of early European history. Ka Ka Mundi was grazed for more than a century before the park was declared in 1974, primarily to preserve bonewood, softwood and brigalow scrubs. Soak up the solitude and seclusion at your peaceful camp site beside Bunbuncundoo Springs, flanked by coloured sandstone cliffs.
