Founded in 1953, the Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) is Australia's oldest professional theatre company, producing up to 12 plays in a subscription season.

MTC productions appear in two venues in the Southbank Theatre: the 500-seat Sumner and the Lawler theatres. Several function rooms are available for hire, and the Script Bar and Bistro is on-site.

Several large-scale productions are staged each season in the 880-seat Playhouse at nearby Arts Centre Melbourne, with smaller-scale MTC works being hosted in the Arts Centre's Fairfax Studio.

Known for its honeycomb exterior, the Melbourne Recital Centre combines cutting-edge architecture and stage technology with state-of-the-art acoustics.

The Recital Centre houses the 1000-seat Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, the 130-seat Salon, broadcast and recording facilities, rehearsal rooms and public spaces.
