Air Sports

Strezlecki Lookout, Corner High Street and Memorial Drive, Newcastle NSW 2300

Air Sports started up in Newcastle at the beginning of 2002. It is owned and directed by Tony Barton, a nice american bloke who is now a permanant resident of Australia. Tony first came to Australia a little over 10 years ago while competing in International Hang Gliding competitions. He has been flying vigorously since 1978 and recevied his Instructor and Tandem rating in 1986. He was the United States National Hang Gliding Champion and Points Champion for 1990 and 1991. Tony flew as a member of the U.S. World Hang Gliding Team for six years, during which they won the World Championships in 1993. His love for flying has taken him many times around the world, happily sharing his passion and experience with others.

A hang gliding tandem flight is the absolute best way to experience the thrill of pure flight! The way it was meant to be. The tandem flight is our first step toward learning the beautiful art of hang gliding. Get hands-on flying experience, safely hanging along side an advanced, certified tandem instructor. Flight duration is approximately 20 - 30 minutes. Choose between a foot launched soaring flight or a 3000ft high altitude aero-towed flight. You can also capture your flying experience and show your friends with an in-flight video! While flying in and around the Newcastle area, we use a number of different flying sites. From coastal ridges to the inland mountains of the Watagan National Forest.

Newcastle City Farmers Markets

Based in Newcastle, Newcastle NSW 2300

NSW Farmers Market Pty Ltd has been operating Farmers and Makers Markets since 1999 where we trialed our very first farmers' market at the Historical River Port of Morpeth, NSW.

In March 2000, along with other creative souls, we initiated the Original Fine Food Market at the Honeysuckle Railway Sheds which were, sadly, to last a fleeting 8 months. The site is now the new home for Newcastle Museum. Since those early trials and tribulations we have seen the establishment of other farmers markets right across Australia that have mushroomed into an important industry for food producers and the public wherever they operate.

Our Company knows that the best way to promote, support and create strong food communities and centres of excellence, are through vibrant Farmers Markets operating every week for you the public.

Vibrant farmers markets are trade and business incubators creating sustainable local food producers through economic incentive thereby strengthening our own local food diversity and security. We are seeing both farmers and the public embracing this interaction and supporting each other to help this industry evolve for the long term.

Over the many years we have introduced many new farmers and artisans to a supportive hungry crowd through our market initiatives. Many of these fine food and artisan creators are still attending the market after all these years of operation. We have said for many years that Farmers and Makers markets are good for product development,  good for the local economy, good for sustainability, good for the environment, good for public well-being and good for tourism. We find it very hard to find an industry to work within that has so many positive outcomes all wrapped up in the one business model.

Miss Porters House

434 King Street, Newcastle NSW 2300
Miss Hazel Porter lived all her life at 434 King Street, Newcastle until her death in 1997 aged 83. Not wishing her home to be redeveloped, she bequeathed the property, its contents and endowment to the National Trust. The freestanding Edwardian terrace built by her father, Herbert Porter in 1909 has been little changed over the years. Entrusted to the care of the National Trust, it survives as a poignant insight into the homes of an era, and the quiet and careful lives of the Porter family. The Porter sisters steadfastly retained their personal possessions and the Trust has been intrigued by the collection of clothing, fabrics, craft materials, linen and general household items that remain in the cupboards and sideboards. Miss Porter's House is a living home, offering you today, a rare and privileged visit into other lives and other times.

Take a dip in the Bogey Hole, which was cut into ocean rocks by convict labour in 1819. You will realise the convicts amazing achievement when you see the waves crashing into the pool. The Bogey Hole was constructed by order of Commandant Morisset in about 1820 for his own personal use. Morisset was Commandant of Newcastle from 1819 to 1822. It was known, originally as the "Commandants Baths". The name "Bogey Hole" was applied afterwards and comes from the indigenous word meaning "to bathe". The Bogey Hole remains a popular spot today, particularly for inner city dwellers who don't like getting sand in their shoes, and still becomes very crowded on warm summer days.
King Edward Park Logo and Images

King Edward Park

York Drive, Newcastle NSW 2300
King Edward Park was dedicated as a recreation reserve in 1863. Within the grounds was a bowling green and the Obelisk, built as a navigational marker in 1850; the focal point is a Victorian rotunda. The park has spectacular ocean views, Norfolk Island pines and a sunken garden usually ablaze of colour. On the southern boundary are the remains of the Shepherds Hill Battery and Gunner's Cottage which were in regular use from 1890 to World War II. The park also has links with Newcastle's penal past, with the Bogey Hole (or convict hewn ocean bathing pool) at the foot of the eastern cliff face. A popular place for family picnics and barbecues, and now a movie venue in summer. The park also has a playground and public toilets. After the Newcastle Police Station closed down in 1982, the Hunter Heritage Centre was developed to encourage the participation, appreciation and understanding of Newcastle's unique history, culture and heritage. In 2007, the Lock-Up was unveiled as the The Lock-Up Cultural Centre. This included the gallery space, museum, and residency program. Since this date, the Lock-Up has had an attendance of over 50,000 people. In September 2014 The Lock Up re-launched as a dedicated multidisciplinary contemporary arts centre and inner city hub for creative thinking and doing.
