Pye Cottage is an original slab hut donated to the Gunning Historical Society by the Pye family. Located in the main street of Gunning, the house is in its original state from circa 1886 to 1887.

Until 1820, Gunning was at the "Limit of Settlement". European settlement started in 1821 with the exploration by a party led by Hamilton Hume. In 1824 Hume with William Hovell pioneered the route from Gunning south to what later became Melbourne. This route was the precursor to the Hume Highway and ran right through the main street of Gunning until 1993. Now a mere two minute detour from the Hume Highway takes you to the relaxed heart of Gunning. The railway arrived in 1875 and is still the main rail link between Sydney and Melbourne.
Gunning is famous these days for fine wool and a huge fireworks festival. Pye Cottage Museum and Gunning Railway are part of the Gunning Town Tour and an optional guided cemetery tour can also be included.

Casual golfers are always welcome to play and the small green fee of AUD5.00 is a small price to pay for the privilege of playing this unique country course. An honesty box is located at the door of the clubhouse.
The course itself is about two kilometres from the centre of town on the Gundaroo Road heading toward Canberra.

The Gunning Tennis Courts are situated within an easy stroll from the main street and close to the heart of Gunning township. The courts offer players the chance to enjoy a social game with friends or family or something more for the more serious competitive player. There is plenty of parking on site.

Just off the Hume Highway between Goulburn and Yass, Gunning makes a great getaway for a day trip or weekend. The town dates back to the 1820s and features many historical buildings. Explorer Hamilton Hume established a sheep enterprise here in 1821 and in 1824, he and William Hovell set off on their expedition to Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne.
Like many towns in the Southern Tablelands, in its early days Gunning experienced issues with bushrangers. In 1840, the Whitton Gang murdered Hamilton Hume's brother John. His grave can be found in the Gunning Cemetery in Wombat Street, and his story is engraved on his tombstone.

The Gunning Pool caters for individual swimmers, school groups, squads and clubs. There are well-grassed grounds and a toddlers wading pool.
