When the Nimrod Theatre building in Belvoir Street, Surry Hills, was threatened with demolition in 1984, more than 600 people – ardent theatre lovers together with arts, entertainment and media professionals – formed a syndicate to buy the building and save this unique performance space in inner-city Sydney.

Over 25 years later, this space, known as Belvoir St Theatre, continues to be the home of one of Australia’s most celebrated theatre companies – Belvoir. Under the artistic leadership of Ralph Myers and General Manager Brenna Hobson, Belvoir engages Australia’s most prominent and promising playwrights, directors, actors and designers to realise an annual season of work that is dynamic, challenging and visionary. CarriageWorks is a multi-venue centre focused on the creation and presentation of contemporary art and culture. There are large flexible theatre spaces (Bay 17 and Bay 20), gallery (Bay 19) and exhibition spaces, rehearsal rooms (Track 8 and Track 12) and a scenery workshop. CarriageWorks is a working hub for practitioners and audiences of the small to medium arts sector.

CarriageWorks is housed in the old Eveleigh Rail Yards at Wilson Street, located within the emerging Redfern Waterloo precinct, and has been developed by the NSW State Government through Arts NSW. Starting with the cathedral-scale foyer, the physical beauty and scope of CarriageWorks is inspiring. The distinctive nineteenth century industrial atmosphere of the former railway carriage and blacksmith workshops have been retained, with many heritage iron and brick details featured in the regeneration of the building.

Production-wise, the Gaelic Theatre features a powerful NEXO Alpha E sound system and comprehensive stage lighting rig/desk in-house.

Flickerfest began as a small local festival at the Balmain High School in 1991. Over the last 21 years it has grown to become Australia's only competitive International Short Film Festival with entries coming from filmmakers across the globe.

Flickerfest is considered in international circles as the leading Australian competitive short film festival and increasingly filmmakers view it as one of the main festivals on the world circuit. To maintain this high standard each year the festival director visits festivals around the world seeking new films most of which have not been seen in Australia.

In 2003 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science elected to recognise Flickererfest as a qualifying festival for the Best Short Film and Best Animation categories of the Academy® Awards. In 2010, Flickerfest was also recognised by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), making films from the UK that won at Flickerfest, eligible for a BAFTA nomination. We are the only short film festival in Australia with BAFTA and Academy® accredited status.

A summer of live music and feature films under the stars is on the way, as Bondi Openair Cinema (20 January 2011 – 5 March 2011) returns to Bondi Pavillion. This marks the second leg of Australian Openair Cinema, which kicked off in St Kilda on 9 December. The outdoor cinemas are located in some of Australia’s iconic locations, beginning on the rooftop of the St Kilda Sea Baths, making its way to the shores of Sydney’s Bondi Beach on 20 January and Rainforest Green of South Bank in Brisbane on 24 February 2011.

Bondi Openair nights are a quintessentially summer event; with feature films playing on huge outdoor screens from dusk. Cinemagoers can relax with some gourmet-style food and tasty beverages from the licensed bar, while listening to the sunset sounds of acoustic sets from emerging musicians.

His obvious passion and commitment translated into success very quickly and by the mid to late 1970's Antonio operated a number of suburban cinemas including The Metropolitan in Brunswick, The Roma in Bourke Street and The Palace in Bourke Street from which the group derived its current corporate identity as Palace.

About White Rabbit

The White Rabbit Collection is one of the world’s largest and most significant collections of contemporary Chinese art. Founded by Kerr and Judith Neilson, it focuses on works produced after 2000.

The origins of the Collection go back to the late 1990s, when Judith Neilson engaged Wang Zhiyuan, a Chinese artist then living in Sydney, as her art tutor. He introduced her to the astonishing explosion of creativity taking place in China in the wake of the “Opening Up” that had begun in 1989. Mrs Neilson began buying works, but soon ran out of space to hang them. She and her husband then decided to open a gallery that would make the exciting world of contemporary Chinese art available to all Australians.

The White Rabbit Gallery, a converted former knitting factory near Sydney’s Central Station, has four floors of exhibition space as well as a theatrette, a library and a teahouse. Only a fraction of the Collection is on show at any time. The entire contents of the gallery are rehung twice a year.

Firstdraft is a non-profit gallery run on a voluntary basis by a group of practising artists. It is one of the longest running and most successful artist-run initiatives in Australia. Firstdraft asserts the importance of contemporary art production, dissemination and discussion in society, providing a stimulating exhibition space that is professional and accessible for a diverse range of artistic practices and projects. Alongside its exhibition program, Firstdraft runs a variety of other programs and projects and in 2010 launched a second venue, Firstdraft Depot.

Firstdraft is assisted by the NSW Government through Arts NSW and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. Firstdraft Depot is supported by City of Sydney. Firstdraft is also supported by Porter’s Paints and Jed Wines.

Aboriginal & Pacific Art represents contemporary Aboriginal art from around Australia. Working with community-owned and -governed art centres, the gallery shows monthly exhibitions of new works, including painting, sculpture and works on paper, from established and emerging artists. Aboriginal & Pacific Art was established by Gabriella Roy in 1996 at the Sydney Dymock’s Building. She has worked with both Aboriginal and Pacific arts and artefacts for the past four decades and brings an acute sense of history and aesthetics to the gallery. At the Dymock’s space, Aboriginal & Pacific Art presented many groundbreaking shows, including solo exhibitions of the late Tiwi artists Kitty Kantilla (Kutuwulumi Purawarrumpatu) and Freda Warlapinni, and the late Fitzroy Crossing artist Janangoo Butcher Cherel. The gallery is also a long-standing representative of Tiwi artist Timothy Cook and South Australian Ngarrindjeri weaver Yvonne Koolmatrie.

Gabriella works together with the art advisors from community art centres to best represent the artists and their works. In 2005, the gallery moved to its current location in Waterloo’s 2 Danks Street, attracting a new and diverse audience. Here, Aboriginal & Pacific Art has presented the yearly Sydney exhibitions of Warakurna Artists, Tjala Arts and Tjungu Palya, all based in South Australia’s Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara (APY) Lands, and solo exhibitions of Tiwi artists Jean Baptiste Apuatimi and Timothy Cook. Aboriginal & Pacific Art is a member of the Australia Commercial Galleries Association (ACGA) and Gabriella is an accredited government valuer (since 1986). The gallery also represents works in the secondary market. The ‘Pacific’ of its title refers to Gabriella’s extensive knowledge and secondary market representation of Oceanic arts.

In September 1992 Darren Knight Gallery opened with a group exhibition at 65 Smith Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne. Exhibiting mainly Australian and New Zealand artists, the gallery operated from this small shop front space for four years before relocating to Sydney.

In February 1997 Darren Knight Gallery Sydney opened in a former pleating factory at 840 Elizabeth Street, Waterloo, the first gallery to establish itself in what is now a thriving arts precinct.

The Damien Minton Gallery is less than a 10 minute walk from either Redfern or Central Station. From Central take the Devonshire Street exit and walk up Chalmers then cross over Cleveland Street and turn left for Great Buckingham Street. (Beware there is a Buckingham Street nearby. It is not the gallery’s address). From Redfern Station cross over Regent Street and walk down Redfern Street to Redfern Park and turn left into Great Buckingham Street.

The Cross Art Projects foregrounds contemporary work that reflects the multiple relationships between art and life, art and the public sphere and explores the boundaries of this context. We are attentive to the local without sacrificing the scope of indigenous and international views. Cross Art enhances its projects with conversations, roundtables and screenings including talks by local activist, architectural and heritage groups.

With over 30 years experience collecting and exhibiting Aboriginal Art, our Executive Director Adrian Newstead personally sources artworks from Aboriginal communities throughout Australia and selects the finest secondary market pieces for Coo-ee's extensive collectors stockroom. Since first working with Aboriginal artists in 1981, Coo-ee Gallery has curated and organised more than 300 Indigenous art exhibitions in Australia and overseas involving individual Aboriginal artists and community groups. The gallery, now situated at the iconic destination of Bondi Beach, Sydney, specialises in both primary and secondary market Aboriginal art. This includes historically important bark paintings, artefacts, and early desert boards as well as high quality contemporary Aboriginal paintings, sculpture and limited edition fine art prints.

Charles Hewitt has been connected with the art world for over 40 years. During this time he has worked with collectors, artists and galleries all over Australia.

In 1964 Charles Hewitt Frames was established; this business has grown from a one man show to a workforce of 18 people. Charles Hewitt commenced production of water gilded mouldings in 1967 and created the first profiles for Brett Whiteley and Russell Drysdale to emulate their choices in Europe and the USA.

Charles Hewitt Frames has also designed, manufactured and supplied more than 400 frames for the National Gallery in Canberra, including the framing of Jackson Pollock’s iconic painting Blue Poles.

In 1989 Charles Hewitt opened a gallery exhibiting antiquarian prints, by 1992 he was also showing an expanding group of young and emerging artists. We now have one of the best exhibition spaces in Sydney in our new gallery at 335 South Dowling Street, Darlinghurst, with a continually developing exhibition schedule of new and established artists.

MAY SPACE, formerly known as Brenda May Gallery (2001-2016) and Access Contemporary Art Gallery (1985-2001), proudly represents a small group of accomplished artists, whilst also supporting established talent and creating opportunities for emerging artists. In addition, the Gallery fosters young curators and provides platforms for engaging curatorial projects.    

The Gallery is devoted to promoting artists in Australia whose works are challenging, compelling and immersive. Expanding further into the Asia-Pacific region, the Gallery has recently exhibited at Art Stage Singapore and after two decades of involvement with the Melbourne Art Fair, at Sydney Contemporary at Carriageworks.    

Black Box Projects was launched in 2014 and is one of the first spaces dedicated to exhibiting moving image artworks in a commercial gallery in Australia, substantiating the Gallery’s commitment to varied contemporary art practices.

The Brett Whiteley Studio was the workplace and home of Australian artist, Brett Whiteley (1939‑92).

The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985 and converted it into a studio and exhibition space. He lived there from 1987 to 1992, the year he died in Thirroul.

The visitor is offered the unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the space - the studio with his unfinished paintings, art equipment and collections of reference books, and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images.

The living area has memorabilia such as photographs, objects, postcards, furniture, his music collection and sketchbooks. The gallery has changing exhibitions of the artist's works: paintings, drawings, sculpture and graphics borrowed from the Whiteley Estate, Art Gallery of New South Wales and private collections.

There is a small gallery shop with postcards, posters and other merchandise for sale. There is no cafe at the Studio, however visitors are welcome to return on the day after refreshing at the numerous cafes and restaurants close by.

The Art Gallery is booked throughout the year with a new exhibition every two weeks. This turn around ensures a diverse and exciting range of exhibitions at the Pavilion. It has the advantage of being close to public transport and Sydney's most famous beach, ensuring a good attendance to the gallery over the two week period.
