Ken Done: The Reef

62 Victoria Parade, Rockhampton QLD 4700
A Rockhampton Art Gallery exhibition. Ken Done is an icon of Australian visual culture, recognised globally for his scenes of Sydney Harbour that are painted in a riot of colour. His work has appeared on everything from doona covers to t-shirts, and featured in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Less known, but equally celebratory, is Done?s ongoing series of reef paintings and drawings. Done has always had a fascination with the world beneath the waves. As a boy he went spearfishing at Balmoral, and as an adult has snorkelled and dived at some of the world?s most renowned tropical paradises: Fiji, Tahiti, Palau, and of course, the Great Barrier Reef. Sketching those experiences, Done often then works his colourful marks into larger paintings, showing the unique forms and luminous colours of coral and fish. Done may not always be depicting one particular dive, or snorkelling site, but rather he portrays the essence of that experience ? one of discovery and wonder....

Rockhampton War Memorial

Penlington Street, Rockhampton QLD 4700
Most WWI memorials are treasured for the local history they provide - the roll call of citizens who fought, forever recorded. Rockhampton War Memorial however is uniquely devoid of such detail. The 19.5 metre obelisk, made from locally sourced Gracemere grey granite, was unveiled by Queensland Governor Sir Matthew Nathan on 16 October 1924. Few WWI memorials in Queensland are of the scale or cost of this regional monument, designed by architects Hockings and Palmer and produced by monumental masons FM Allen for ?2,654, the most expensive in Queensland. Unfortunately funds wouldn't stretch to recording the soldiers' names on the monument. An honour board was planned for the soon to be completed Soldiers Club rooms. One of the architects, Edwin Morton Hockings, had first-hand knowledge of war: he was wounded while commanding a squadron in the Boer War and served in WWI. The First World War Memorial is located in Rockhampton's Botanic Gardens. A gun, or war trophy, is located nearby....

My Country, I Still Call Australia Home: Contemporary Art from Black Australia

62 Victoria Parade, Rockhampton QLD 4700
A Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art travelling exhibition. Many Indigenous Australian artists title their works 'My Country' - it is a simple yet unflinching statement about their land: where they are from, where they belong. 'My Country' also refers to the more recently constructed nation of Australia, highlighting the ways in which Indigenous artists and people engage with the idea of country. From paintings and sculptures about ancestral epicentres, to photographs and videos that interrogate and challenge the established history of Australia, to artworks responding to political and social situations that affect all Australians today, this exhibition is about sharing experiences and telling stories....
