You can take the Banksia track from Woodgate township, do the Birdhide walk or access the longer Melaleuca track from the Burrum Point camping area. Nature thrill seekers with some horsepower behind them will enjoy varied Four Wheel Drive tracks on offer which lead to secluded picnic spots and camping areas and in the Kinkuna section you can pitch your tent for the night right on the ocean with the stars as your ceiling. Woodgate is a fisherman's paradise with prawning, crabs and some great hidden fishing spots, just ask some of the locals to point you in the right direction. If you are after bushwalking gold, then stop hunting - the treasure lies right here in the Melaleuca Track. This walk is a four-hour return journey of softly lapping waves on the sand, native landscape, birds, butterflies and other wildlife with none other than the Melaleuca (which comes from a family of over 300 types of trees - most will be familiar with the common paperbark or tea tree) ending the journey. Kilometres of quiet beaches run parallel to the track providing a soft ocean soundtrack for your walk and when you wind your way through saltpans, mangroves and swamp you might just spot a Brolga or Jabiru. Flowering wattle blossoms and other native plants such as the Acacia attracts a diverse range of butterflies and birds such as the Rufous Whistler and Bronze Cuckoo with its distinctive striped underbelly. This track is part of the Burrum Coast National Park and is easily accessible via Walkers Point Day Camping area or the Burrum Point Camping area (which is only accessible via Four Wheel Drive). In four hours you can educate yourself in the native flora, fauna and wildlife so unique to the Southern Great Barrier Reef's diverse coastal habitats....
